Harold “Bill” L. McCoy Jr., 79, of Sam Rayburn, Texas, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 14, 2026.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Shultz Funeral Home, with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Bill was born on March 25, 1947, in Pensacola, Florida, to Harold “Bill” L. McCoy Sr. and Marjorie McCoy. He spent many years in Sheldon, Texas, before moving to Sam Rayburn in 2007 with his wife, janice. The lake house that began as a getaway in 1997 became home, and retirement gave him the opportunity to enjoy life at his own pace, surrounded by the people and things he loved.

Bill was a proud veteran, serving four years in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he worked as a steel salesman and then he built a long career with the United States Postal Service, eventually retiring as a Postal Supervisor.

But a résumé doesn’t tell you who Bill really was.

Bill was one of those people who was simply Bill. He was rough around the edges, funny, stubborn, independent, and never afraid to say exactly what was on his mind. If you knew him, chances are you have a story about something he said or did—and chances are that story still makes you laugh.

He loved football, the Houston Astros, country music, a good game of cards, pitching horseshoes, and shooting pool. He enjoyed the lake, good conversation, and doing things his own way. He didn’t need a lot of fuss or formality. Bill lived his life on his own terms, and that was part of what made him who he was.

More than anything, Bill leaves behind a family who loved him and a lifetime of memories that will continue to be shared for generations. His stories, sayings, sense of humor, and unmistakable personality will live on in the people who knew him best.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janice McCoy of Sam Rayburn; sons, Tommy Miller and wife Tina of The Woodlands, and Brandt McCoy and wife Amber of Sam Rayburn; grandchildren, Brett Miller and wife Adriana, Tiffani Miller, Tristen Miller, and Maci McCoy; great-grandchildren, Ellie Miller, Beck Miller, and Emmett Miller; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Martin Miller; and sisters, Mary McCoy and Jeannie McPhearson.

Bill lived a long life, exactly the way he wanted to, and when the time came, he was able to leave this world peacefully at home. He will be missed more than words can say, but he will also be remembered the way he would probably have wanted—with a good story, a laugh, a cold Miller Lite, and maybe a little argument about football.
