Louis "Bud "Willoughby

d. September 27, 2024

Louis Wylie “Bud” Willoughby, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 27, 2024. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Sheila and Nettie’s home.

Bud was born in Port Barre, Louisiana on December 7, 1934 to Charlie Willoughby and Adele Goodwin. Bud was the middle of son of three. He spent his youth playing cowboys and Indians with his brothers. In addition, he would oftentimes leave the playground of school to go sit on the gate while Mr. Dickens ate his lunch. Mr. Dicken would send him down to the store to buy him cigarettes, yes, they would sell cigarettes to a child. This was the man who would someday become his father-in-law.

Riding his horse, Tony, down to meet Nettie was a favorite pastime. He would ask her to ride with him. To this day she has never been on a horse. So that may not have been the best way to win her heart. In later years, he shared his love of gold with his brothers, probably leading to more laughter than playing golf.

Louis married Nettie on May 26, 1956. He started his work time in Kilgore, Texas while attending Kilgore Junior College. One night he came home and announced to Nettie that he wasn’t happy with the paper he was writing in college and he wished he didn’t have to turn it in. He got his wish because the next morning the call came in for him to report to Tidewater Oil Company in Hobbs, NM.

Through the years, Tidewater became Getty, which soon became Texaco, which is now Chevron. Louis moved his family from Hobbs, to Midland, to Andrews, back to Midland, and next to Kilgore. He then spent 40 years in Houston before retiring.

He took his knowledge to Reading and Bates Drilling Company. Finally deciding he was done with the oil business, he went home. Nettie quickly told him to find another job because he was making her nuts at the house. He got a job at Academy selling guns and it was a perfect fit for him. He enjoyed talking to the customers, telling stories and reliving some of his good times. When his daughter decided to retire, he and Nettie packed up and moved to Jasper with her. Louis spent his days down in the barn working in his shop area and reading.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, brother Stephen Eugene and nephew Samuel Willoughby.

Left to keep his memory alive are his wife of 68 years, Nettie; his daughter Sheila; granddaughter Briony and husband Mason; son Dwayne and wife Robbye, grandchildren Rebecca and Christopher; grandson Mateo; his brother Clifford “Buster” and wife Diane, nieces Amanda and Stacey; nephews Forrest and wife Mickey, Tony Willoughby, Clyde and wife Tami.  Condolences can be posted at www.shultzfuneralhomeofjasper.com , Facebook at Shultz Funeral Home &Crematory, or on Instagram at Shultzfh.
