Robert Harrelson, better known as “Woody” to many and “Bob” to others, passed away at the age of 77 on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at his home in Jasper, Texas. He was born October 30, 1947, in Beaumont to Herbert and Vera Harris Harrelson.
A lover of sports, whether it be college or professional level, he loved watching baseball and football, especially his LSU Tigers. Beyond being a fan, he shared his passion by spending years coaching youth baseball, where he passed on not just a love of the game and competition, but lessons of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
He was a man who believed in dedication and a strong work ethic. He served his country faithfully for 51 years, taking great pride in his Army career and in being a Vietnam veteran. Over the course of his military career, he was awarded numerous commendations. After his military retirement, Bob continued his lifelong commitment to service by working with Cubic Corporation, where he carried forward the same dedication and leadership that defined his Army career.
Whether he was coaching on the field, directing tankers in the motor pool, or speaking his mind over the Miles radio, Bob was known for calling things exactly the way he saw them. He never believed in sugarcoating, and while he could be tough, he had a knack for pushing people further than they thought they could go.
His honesty, encouragement- and yes, even the legendary butt-chewings- no doubt left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him. Genuine, straight-forward, hardworking, and true to himself. He believed in duty and was committed to his family, showing up as a great provider, and did so until his last breath. He cared deeply for the people in his life, stood firm in what he believed, and will be remembered for a life and legacy of service and strength.
He is survived by his son Robbie Harrelson of Denton, Texas; daughter Niki Norton & husband Jeff of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; wife LaWanda Harrelson of Call, Texas; sister Sheila Harrelson of Jasper; and a granddaughter Madison.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 30th at the VFW Post 3106 at 205 E. Harriet Street in Leesville, LA from 3:00 pm- 6:00pm. Condolences can be posted at www.shultzfuneralhomeofjasper.com, on Facebook at Shultz Funeral Home & Crematory, or on Instagram at Shultzfh.
